A Look Back At The Glory Years of Pride Fighting Championship by George Miller
In 1997, the Tokyo Dome played host to a newly-conceived Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) event in Japan to attract mass media attention that rivals the American promotion Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). The first ever event now known as the Pride Fighting Championship saw 47,000 paying fans treated to a visual demonstration of martial arts between the Rickson Gracie of Brazil and Nobuhiko Takada of host Japan. Unlike in the UFC, where younger brother Royce Gracie represented the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because they do not consider Royce the best of the brood, Rickson was supposedly the best fighter out of the clan, with a mythical 400-0 Vale Tudo record, dating back decades ago. Gracie defeated Takada by armbar in just under 5 minutes of the first round.
After the first event became a huge success, the promotion’s management decided to stage a series of Pride events, and capitalized on a huge business opportunity by gaining profit using pay per view services. Then Pride President Naoto Morishita invited more elite warriors all over the world to fight for their organization, rather than heading west. Pride saw the arrival of popular fighters such as Gary Goodridge, Oleg Taktarov, Renzo Gracie, and Dan Severn. After a couple of events, former UFC fighters Royce Gracie, Marco Ruas, Wanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort all invaded the Pride ring.
3 years and 8 events later, Dream Stage Entertainment (DSE), Pride FC’s parent company, decided to take it to the next level by adapting to a tournament similar to the first few UFC events and Vale Tudo tournaments. In 2000, an eight-man Openweight elimination tournament featured the top fighters in the world. The Pride Grand Prix 2000’s objective is to simply determine who the baddest man on the planet is. The Grand Prix saw the most epic fight that changed modern MMA, where Kazushi Sakuraba wore out then-unbeatable Royce Gracie after 6 rounds and a total of 90 minutes of Sakuraba’s dominance over the Brazilian. Prior to the event, Gracie requested for unlimited rounds and no judges. The long match took a toll on the Japanese warrior, as his corner threw in the towel after one round on his succeeding match against eventual finalist Igor Vovchanchyn of Ukraine. Later that night, Vovchanchyn lost the finals to American wrestler, and the first ever UFC heavyweight champion, Mark “The Hammer” Coleman.
2002 saw the MMA organization team up with another Japanese combat promotion, K-1. K-1 is world-wide fighting league that features the best strikers in the world. Unlike MMA, K-1 only allows strikes and stand-up fighting, like Kickboxing, Savate, Karate and Muay Thai. The two organizations gave birth to the biggest fight event in the world, called Pride Shockwave, showcasing the cream of the crop from both promotions. The first Shockwave event attracted 90,000 fans in the arena.
The very next year, Pride FC was caught in disarray when President Naoto Morishita was found dead hanging in his hotel room. His untimely death was speculated by the Yakuza’s involvement in Pride, stirring further allegations that some matches were fixed for betting reasons. Its second president, Nobuyuki Sakakibara, assumed the post shortly after.
The show must go on, and Sakakibara wasted no time by introducing a lineup of events to divert any negative attention in Pride. 2003 launched the Pride Bushido series, focusing on the lighter weight classes. Lightweights and welterweights grabbed the chance to come on board the Japanese promotion. The very same year, Pride brought back the tournament format, this time featuring the middleweights.
To avoid confusion, the weight classes in Pride differ from the UFC. With the unified rules sanctioned in the UFC, their lightweights are pegged at 155 lbs., welterweight at 170, middleweight at 185, light heavyweight at 205, and heavyweight weighing from 206 to 265 lbs. Whereas in Pride, the lightweight limit is 161 lbs. (73 kg.), the welterweight division is at 183 (83 kg.), middleweight at 205 (93 kg.) and heavyweight from 206 and above. Therefore, Pride middleweights are usually matched with UFC light heavyweights, and UFC middleweights are the same size as Pride welterweights.
The Pride Middleweight Grand Prix in 2003 was supposed to be a perfect opportunity for UFC President Dana White to prove that their biggest 205 star, Chuck Liddell, to run through the entire tournament and face its cross-promotion rival, Wanderlei Silva of Chute Boxe Academy. After Liddell was entered in the tournament, the Iceman won the first round by knocking out Dutch kickboxer Alistair Overeem. Unfortunately for White, the semifinal round proved too much for Liddell, as he was halted in the second round by fellow American Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. Rampage would eventually lose the finals to Silva in brutal fashion. The Grand Prix opened the eyes to more Americans, and broaden Pride’s viewership across the globe.
With every Grand Prix enjoying successful shows, Pride integrated its events with annual Grand Prix tournaments. A heavyweight tournament was held in 2004, where Russian legend Fedor Emelianenko began his journey as an unstoppable force, and was crowned the tournament champion. In 2005, 23 year-old Mauricio “Shogun” Rua rammed through the entire tournament and was named the best 205 fighter in the world. Like in 2000, another Openweight tournament was held in 2006. As expected, Croatian heavyweight Mirko Cro Cop blasted through everyone, and became the best fighter in all of MMA, after knocking out Wanderlei Silva.
Pride has continued to enjoy success after almost a decade of operation. In 2006, Pride and UFC agreed to create more cross-promotional matches, to determine who has the best fighters in the world. The realization of fantasy match-ups seemed closer to fruition when Pride staged its first MMA event in US soil. Pride 32: The Real Deal took place at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The event was also the first time a Pride event was held outside Japan. Pride came back for another US event the next year, with Pride 33: The Second Coming attracting 12,000 paying fans, once again in Las Vegas.
Pride’s US events may have allegedly been initiated for Japanese organizers to close a deal with Zuffa. As it turned out, Zuffa owner Lorenzo Fertitta announced that their company has acquired the rights and assets of Pride Fighting Championship from Dream Stage Entertainment in 2007. From the looks of it back then, the acquisition of Pride would only get better for the MMA industry, and its fans, as unseen matchups would be easier to do. Notable Pride fighters Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Wanderlei Silva, Dan Henderson, Rampage Jackson and Shogun Rua all invaded the Octagon, while fans were waiting for UFC fighters to battle the likes of Fedor Emelianenko, Takanori Gomi, Kazushi Sakuraba, and Hayato Sakurai. The initial plan was to have Pride continue as a separate entity while under the Zuffa banner. After the deal was officially closed, Pride officially closed its Japanese office The final Pride event, Pride 34: Kamikaze, provided as the curtain call for DSE.
On October 4, 2007, the Pride era officially ended, a week short of celebrating its 10th anniversary.
